If you really want to get fit, then you have to do something you love. Any other form of exercise done for its own sake simply won’t stand the test of time.

But don’t take my word for it – look back on your own history and tell yourself quite honestly; how many times have you commenced a new exercise regimen that you swear you’re going to keep up forever until you … well … don’t!?

This is the trap so many of us fall into because we’re trying to do something that, essentially, we don’t really ant to do and therein lies the basic error.

Instead of this policy which is almost designed to fail, ask yourself what it is that you truly love doing  – which is also at least a little physically demanding, and make that your goal. The key here is to do something physical you’d generally rather do than not – and then you’re on the way to fitness.

That’s because it isn’t work – it’s leisure. And human beings are great at pursuing leisure!

For me, my chosen hobbies are skiing and climbing. Both are brilliant for developing fitness across all three major fitness areas, namely stamina, strength and suppleness – particularly if you mix in a little hill walking.

And it needn’t cots a bomb; skis, ski boots, salopettes, ski jackets, walking boots, base layers, climbing shoes and all the other necessary kit are coming down almost daily in price – and you really don’t need the trendiest labels and most expensive brands. Just get some decent basic equipment and clothing and get on with living instead of thinking about. Just try and find whatever it is you love doing – and do it!
