Think how you feel when you arrive late at night after a long and harrowing journey to that holiday cottage that the whole family has been looking forward to for months.
Now tell me, at that moment, what do you most hanker after? OK, it’s probably a little food and drink and to go to bed – but most of all what you want is for the place to be clean and welcoming.
It doesn’t need to be absolutely perfect. But it does need to be clean and functional. So if you have any kind of holiday letting accommodation or you’re even thinking about getting into that business – then you don’t need to spend a fortune on things – but you do need to make the place smart, clean and welcoming.
So by all means, skimp a little on the furnishings; a new cheap dining table and chairs, a cheap sofa and chairs – and other cheap bits and pieces are absolutely fine – but don’t try and save money on a fresh lick of paint, or on cleaning or bedding etc.
These things are far more important to holidaymakers than are fancy fixtures, fittings and expensive furniture.
After all, most holiday places are little more than essential accommodations that enable you to visit a place and go outside and really do whatever it is you came to do. In other words, the place isn’t usually an end in itself, but a means to an end.
Also, if you buy really good stuff, it will get a fair old battering anyway – particularly if it’s let to families on holiday – which could then cause offence if it looks grubby.
Whereas, with the cheaper flat pack stuff, you won’t feel too bad about replacing it after a couple of seasons.
Other more solid furniture can easily be renovated or painted up every couple of years. So think it through and get some bargains in the Harveys furniture sales or similar events; just remember, above all, to keep things cost-effective, clean and functional. Anything else is merely a bonus.
If you really want to get fit, then you have to do something you love. Any other form of exercise done for its own sake simply won’t stand the test of time.

But don’t take my word for it – look back on your own history and tell yourself quite honestly; how many times have you commenced a new exercise regimen that you swear you’re going to keep up forever until you … well … don’t!? Read the rest of this entry »
When it comes to places in theUKwhich have the best cuisine and produce, Yorkshire definitely has to come high up on the list.
Thanks to a wide expanse of countryside surrounding it, as well as coastline, there’s food and drink to suit pretty much every taste going.
You can head toWhitbyto sample some amazing fish and seafood or to any of the pubs in the area to have a Yorkshire pudding with your Sunday Roast.
Whether locally sourced healthy sandwich fillings are your bag or you fancy sampling a bit of Yorkshire Parkin with a cup of tea, you’re bound to find plenty to tickle your fancy.
The old adage: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” is worth bearing in mind when you’re heading to Yorkshire. There are some things which just aren’t the same up there! If you’re heading to a bakery, for example, you need to remember to ask for the correct things – a bread cake is a roll, while a bun is a fairy cake, which can get somewhat confusing at times!
Don’t even get me started about snickets and ginnels either – that’s a whole other kettle of fish so to speak!
So back to what you should be trying while you’re up inYorkshire. Aside from Parkin andYorkshirepuddings, you need to make sure you try some Wensleydale cheese. It might come as a surprise to some, but this tastes particularly good with Christmas cake (presumably any type of fruit cake would do though, realistically).
If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you should treat yourself to a few Pontefract Cakes when you get a chance too – but steer clear if you’re not a fan of liquorice.
Basically, there’s a very wide variety of Yorkshire cuisine and you’ll be absolutely spoilt for choice if you’re planning to visit the region any time soon!
